Spring has sprung and it’s time to kick your cleaning into full gear! Garages can easily become cluttered with spare household items, seasonal decorations, sports equipment, tools, and other miscellaneous objects. Fortunately, our D & D team has the perfect method to give your garage clutter the deep spring cleaning it needs!
Step 1: Take All the Clutter Out
Begin by completely clearing your garage of all items so you can start fresh when putting your items away. To properly clean out your garage, you need to know exactly how much clutter you have accumulated and what storage solutions you will need after organizing your belongings.
Step 2: Separate Into Piles
While everything is outside of your garage, it is best to separate your belongings into “keep” piles. However, you will need to come up with a sufficient system for deciding what is worthy of staying in your newly organized garage. Start by asking yourself “ is this in my garage for a reason, or because I didn’t know where else to put it? ” If you weren’t sure where else to put the said items, they most likely aren’t necessary to keep.
Step 3: Decide What To Do With The Remaining Items
The items that don’t make it onto your “keep” pile are, by default, clutter. Make sure you have spare bins available to put the items you wish to sell or donate. Bag up the remaining items that don’t make your “sell” or “donate” piles and toss them into your trash. If you have more junk than your trash can is able to accommodate, consider hiring a junk removal service or renting a dumpster. If you have any items that you plan to donate, research local charities or nonprofits nearby to drop your items off. You may run into the issue that certain items won’t be accepted. With enough research, you can find what opportunities your local community offers! Taking your remaining items that are worth a little extra side cash, you can host a yard sale or consider listing them on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.
Step 4: Deep Clean The Interior & Exterior
After removing all the items out of your garage and weeding through what you no longer need, you can begin to give your garage a deep clean. It’s best to start top to bottom, beginning with cabinets, shelves, or a spare refrigerator that could use a dusting. Sweep, vacuum, and hose off your garage floors to remove loose debris. The exterior of your garage is just as important. So, don’t forget to hose and wipe down your garage door and doorframe. If your home has garage windows, make sure you give them a good clean, too!
Step 5: Organize & Categorize
Now that your garage is free of unnecessary clutter, you can begin to organize and combat the accumulation of clutter. Knowing what items you have and are keeping will allow you to decide the best storage solution for your home. There are a variety of options to choose from. Including storage shelves, cabinets, pegboards, track systems, and categorizing items into bins.
